Aizawl, city, capital of Mizoram state, northeaster India and officially established on 25 February 1890. It is in the north-central part of the state on a ridge at an elevation of about 2,950 feet (900 metres). In 1972, it created the union territory of Mizoram from a portion of Assam, with Aizawl as the administrative centre. When Mizoram was re-designated as a state in 1987, the city became its capital.
